GGGrandfathers Lewis Harlan and David Lockridge in the Civil War


David Lockridge and Lewis Harlan served in the Civil War. They were Pearl Harlan's grandfathers.               

34th Regiment Iowa Infantry

Great Great Grandfather Lewis Harlan age 39 nativity Ohio joined
Company D 34th Iowa Regiment on August 13, 1962 from Warren
County, Iowa as 2nd Corporal. He was promoted to Third Sergeant on January 5, 1963.   He was discharged for disability on May 20, 1963 in St Louis.  A George W Harlan (brother?) age 27 nativity Illinois joined on August 19, 1962.

Great Great Grandfather David Lockridge age 21 nativity Indiana joined Company H 34th Iowa Regiment on August 20, 1962 from Warren County, Iowa. He was discharged for disability on March 25, 1963 in St Louis.  A Joseph Lockridge age 20 nativity Indiana joined on August 19, 1962.

The 34th mustered in at Camp Lauman in  Burlington, Iowa with 951
men in September - October, 1862.  About 600 men suffered from the measles and pneumonia, with many dying.  The unit lfet on November 22, 1962 for Helena, Arkansas, arriving on December 5, 1962, where they were hit by smallpox.  They served near Vicksburg under General Sherman at the Chickasaw Bayou battle December 27-29, 1962.  

The Regiment next went to Arkansas Post, and helped capture the Fort on 9-11 January 1963.  About 800 rebels were killed, as well as 1,000 union men (17 died from the 34th).  The unit then escorted prisoners to Camp Douglas in Chicago, with many dying on the steam boat. They returned to Benton Barracks on 5 Feb 1963.

Our GGGGrandfathers were discharged soon after returning from
Chicago for disability. The Regiment continued on through the Civil War.
