ELDON M. HULLINGER, 85, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Garrett, passed away Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, shortly after the Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series. Born Nov. 8, 1930, in Vivian, S.D., he was a son of Elmer and Ruth (Winchell) Hullinger. He was a 1948 graduate of Waterloo High School.
Eldon worked for the Fuller Brush Company as a salesman for 25 years and later went to work for Hires Automotive for eight years, retiring in 2010.
He was an avid IU basketball fan but had a passion for baseball and enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. He was active in the Stan Musial Baseball program managing the Kummings Insurance Team. "He enjoyed the game so much you would often catch him substituting for someone at the age of 69."
Surviving are his companion of 36 years, Virginia Polete of Fort Wayne; two sons, Thomas (Mary Jo) Hullinger of Kendallville and Timothy Hullinger of Auburn; two granddaughters, Lindsay (Andrew) Thomas of Indianapolis, and Holly (Adam) Sirken of Fort Wayne; four great-grandchildren, Adeline, Xavier and Amelia Sirken, and Eva Thomas; and a brother, Franklin Hullinger of Auburn. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Pete, Vernon, Donald Dean, and Allen Hullinger; a sister, Myrtle Henderson; a niece, Nila Ruth Henderson; and a nephew, Larry Hullinger.
Service is 11 a.m. Monday at Feller & Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Chaplain Tom Novy officiating. Visitation also from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial in Waterloo Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the United States Air Force and American Legion Post 178 of Garrett.
