Carolyn Smith

Carolyn Smith, 80 of Vivian, died Friday, June 20 at Avera Maryhouse Hospice Suite. A prayer service will be held at 7:00pm, Tuesday, June 24 at the Vivian Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, June 25 at the Vivian Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Vivian Cemetery.
Born on December 13, 1933, to John F. and Pearl (Harlan) Hullinger, Carolyn lived her childhood years on the family farm south of Vivian and attended Vivian Public Schools until her high school graduation in 1951.
Post high school, Carolyn studied at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD, and at a vocational school in Omaha, NE. She then taught at the Swinson School in rural Lyman County and worked in the South Dakota Department of Health in Pierre, SD.
On February 4, 1954, she wed Lorne Smith, joining him at his farm near Vivian and beginning their sixty-year marriage that welcomed six sons: Brad, Bern, Pat, Gordy, Harlan, and Marty.
Carolyn combined homemaking and parenting with church and community work. As a member of the Vivian Lutheran (ELCA) Church, she taught religious education classes, led Luther League groups, and spearheaded building the sanctuary addition dedicated in 1997. During the 1980 and 1990 decades, Carolyn completed EMT training in support of the area’s ambulance volunteers and directed local actors in plays that served as Vivian-community fundraisers. In 2003, she produced and directed Lyman High School’s drama class performance in Presho, SD.
Besides family, church, and community activity, Carolyn traveled with her husband throughout North America. In their motor home (RV), they rode on a train flatcar through Copper Canyon in Mexico and traversed the length of Baja. They drove the RV along the Alcan Highway after ferrying to Alaska and toured forty-five of the “lower forty-eight” USA states. Leaving the continent, they visited the islands of Maui, Oahu, and Hawaii.
In addition to her husband Lorne, Carolyn’s surviving family members include five sons and their families: Vivian resident Brad, his wife Deb and daughters Celese and Keera; Pierre-SD resident Bern, his wife Judy and sons Spencer, Alex, and Sam; Vivian resident Pat, his wife Dawn and sons Cody and Jeff and daughter Arielle Michael and son-in-law Nick Michael; Deadwood-SD resident Gordy and his wife Mary; Minneapolis-MN resident Marty, his fiancĂ© Michelle Sears and sons Ben and Charlie and Michelle’s daughter Matilda.
Other survivors are siblings Clifford Hullinger of Chicago, IL; Margaret Rohde of Kennewick, WA; Doris Hulce of Waitsburg, WA; Virginia Hullinger of Presho, SD; sisters-in-law Audrey Hullinger and Eunice Hullinger, both of Vivian; brothers-in-law Dick Smith of Vivian; Lyle Smith of Sioux Falls, SD. Eighteen nephews and fourteen nieces also survive her.
Carolyn and Lorne’s son Harlan died in 1967 at the age of five. Others who preceded Carolyn in death are her parents and her siblings Maribee Erikson, Ellis (Red) Hullinger, John (Jack) Hullinger.

Our beloved aunt Carolyn Smith has passed away. She was a wonderful person.  Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

M.E. "Red" Hullinger was born on May 29, 1927 to John F. and Pearl Harlan Hullinger at their farm home south of Vivian, SD. After graduation for Vivian High School in 1945, he spent five years with the U.S. Navy, serving on tow destroyers-the USS Coolbaugh and the USS Goodrich.
Ellis served on bards for West Central Electric, Vivian Township, and Soil Conservation. He also was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In non-official community roles, Ellis removed snow for the neighbors, chauffeured the sick and the elderly, and was a willing fix-it man.

A guitar player and country-western sing, Ellis sometimes performed with local dance combos but more frequently entertained at local affairs. He regularly visited shut-ins and often played and sang for then, as well.
He continued the country-western focus with his love of horses and roping. He broke broncs and trailed cattle. He twirled rope, usually for the entertainment of small children, whom he loved and who loved him.

Ellis died Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at his home in Vivian.

Ellis' surviving family includes his wife Audry of Vivian, and his children and their families, Colleen and Darrell Erlandson and sons Jerry and Jeff of Sioux Falls, SD, Ronda and Harold Gutsche and daughters Sherry and Kristi and sons Sam and Guy of Rozet, WY, Lyle and Marsha Hullinger and sons Brodie and Toby of Vivian, SD Dan and Tenna Harvey of Kansas City, MO and Gene Harvey of Detroit, MI, brother Clifford Hullinger and wife Louise of Chicago, Il; sisters, Maribee Erikson of Waitsburg, WA, Margaret Rohde and Husband Ernie of Kennewick, WA, Carolyn Smith and husband Lorne of Waitsburg, WA, Doris Hulce and husband Bob of Waitsburg, WA, and Viginia Hullinger of Presho; sister-in-law Eunice Hullinger of Vivian and 24 nephews and nieces.

D-Day Program on WW II

Radio station WBBM 780 am in Chicago presented a short program on WWII in honor of the 70th Anniversay of D-Day on June 6, 2014.

Clif Hullinger was interviewed. He fought all through World War II, beginning in North Africa and then the Italian campaign. The battles his unit fought in included Anzio and Monte Casino. He earned a battlefield Commission at Anzio.

A few photos and stories about Clif below:

Sgt. Dan Harding took over Clif Hullinger's platoon when he made First Sgt.  The platoon was laying concertina wire in front of an infantry position one night. They saw two soldiers in a foxhole and moved the wire out to include them.

Dan went over to them and asked them how it was going. They answered in German! Turned out it was a German outpost with two very scared recruits in it. Dan promptly took them prisoner and the barbed wire line made a sharp bend at that point.

The sketch was made for the Stars and Stripes in Italy in 1944 by Austrian born soldier-of-fortune, artist Rudoph Charles von Ripper. The sketch shows Sgt Harding of my platoon laying barb wire concertina at Anzio. Von Ripper drew this because the squad "fenced" in a German outpost before identifying them and capturing them.  The wire took a sharp job at that point!

Monte Cassino. Many Allied Divisions tried to take this mountain.  A very tough objective.

Milk Cow - Squirt Cat

When I was a small child one thing we enjoyed was squirting milk from the milk cow on to the kittens and cats.  Uncle Red liked to show the kids how to do it.  The kittens thoroughly enjoyed the milk shower and would come up to cow and milker begging for milk. We were glad to oblige them. The kittens loved it, we loved it, and the cow did not mind. She did not have a cow.

Remember - don't have a cow.

Does anyone have a photo of anyone in our Hullinger family doing this?  I am sure most of the older ones of us have done this, but I don't have a photo. Send it to craighullinger@gmail.com if you have a photo to share.
